Vehicle collision temporarily closed northbound Glenn Highway near Knik River Bridge

Northbound lanes of the Glenn Highway closed for about an hour Tuesday afternoon due to a vehicle collision, Alaska State Troopers said.

The highway closed around 3 p.m. near Mile 29, troopers said in an alert. Traffic was rerouted onto the Old Glenn Highway, and the highway reopened by around 4:15 p.m., according to an updated alert from troopers.

Snow fell throughout Southcentral Alaska on Tuesday.

Road conditions were hazardous in the Matanuska and Susitna valleys, troopers wrote in the alert. The Alaska Department of Transportation said there was snow on the roadway, and blowing snow was reducing visibility.

Roads were slick in Anchorage on Tuesday afternoon, transportation department spokesman Justin Shelby said. Sanding crews were working to improve roadways and were especially focused on intersections and roundabouts, he said.

“Be very cautious, especially when approaching intersections,” he advised drivers. “Even if the road appears to be good, we are getting reports that with the new snow lying on top of the road it can be very deceptive.”

Anchorage police responded to 17 collisions, five of which had injuries, and 16 vehicles in distress by mid-afternoon, a spokeswoman said.
