Oregon man dies when struck by minivan in Seward Highway pullout

An Oregon man died Thursday evening in a Seward Highway pullout near Turnagain Pass when he was struck by a minivan after getting out of his vehicle, Alaska State Troopers say.

William Foss, 46, had just exited his Ford SUV and was standing next to it when the driver of a southbound Dodge van left their lane and struck the parked vehicle as well as Foss, troopers said.

A grassy median separates the highway and pullout in that area, according to troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel.

Foss was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman and boy in the SUV were taken to an Anchorage hospital for treatment of injuries described as not life-threatening, troopers said. A passenger in the van was airlifted to an Anchorage hospital and the driver was taken to a Seward-area hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening, according to troopers.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation but speed does not appear to be a factor, McDaniel said. The highway surface at the time was dry and the weather was overcast, he said.

The State Medical Examiner Office will conduct an autopsy.

An investigation continues. No charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon.
