A magnitude 5.1 earthquake jolted Southcentral Alaska late Saturday morning.
The quake, which occurred at 10:59 a.m. at a depth of nearly 55 miles, was centered across Cook Inlet from Nikiski and other communities on the Kenai Peninsula, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.

It was felt widely throughout the region. A tsunami was not expected, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.
Smaller aftershocks — dozens of which may be large enough to be felt — are likely to occur over the next week, the Associated Press reported, citing the Alaska Earthquake Center.
