Texas man dies after head-on collision between SUV and semi on Dalton Highway

A Texas man died Saturday after a head-on collision with a semi truck on the Dalton Highway about 75 miles northwest of Fairbanks, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers received an alert from a satellite-linked device around 11:30 a.m. about a collision with injuries at Mile 5 of the Dalton Highway, according to an online statement from troopers.

A Mazda SUV had crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a tractor-trailer rig head-on, troopers wrote.

Troopers responded along with officials from the Department of Transportation and medical personnel from Alyeska Pipeline Pump Station 5, the statement said. The driver of the SUV, 60-year-old Xuegeng Wang of Texas, was brought to a Fairbanks hospital by an Alyeska Pipeline Services helicopter, troopers said.

Wang died at the hospital. Troopers did not immediately say whether the truck driver was injured or if there were other passengers in either vehicle.

Troopers said the investigation is ongoing.

The Dalton Highway, known informally as the haul road, runs for hundreds of miles to the Prudhoe Bay oil fields on Alaska’s North Slope.
