California man missing after raft flips in Katmai National Park

A 72-year-old man is missing in Katmai National Park and Preserve after his raft flipped this week, the National Park Service said Thursday.

The man from Sacramento, California, was in a raft with two others when it capsized Tuesday on American Creek, according to the National Park Service.

The other two people were able to make it to the creek shores and hike downstream, on opposite sides of the creek, to a guided camp. People at the camp used a satellite phone to call a nearby lodge.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Rainbow River Lodge staff, Alaska State Troopers and National Park Service rangers searched the area with rafts, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

No signs have been found of the missing man, and search efforts were suspended Thursday until new evidence of his location is discovered. Pilots that operate in the area have told the National Park Service that they intend to continue the search, the agency said.

The man hasn't been named, pending next-of-kin notification.

The Park Service said the man had "extensive experience" rafting in Alaska. He wasn't wearing a personal flotation device when the raft flipped, the National Park Service said.

Katmai National Park headquarters in King Salmon are about 290 miles southwest of Anchorage by airplane.
