Seward Highway reopens after 2-vehicle wreck with injuries brings traffic to a standstill

The Seward Highway reopened late Friday after being shut down in both directions due to a two-vehicle crash with injuries south of Girdwood, according to Alaska State Troopers.

At about 5:30 p.m. Friday, troopers responded to an injury crash at Mile 88.5 of the Seward Highway, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said.

After an investigation, troopers determined a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder driven by 25-year-old Keegan Castle, of Eagle River, crossed over the double yellow centerline heading north on the highway.

The Nissan then struck a 2014 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by 50-year-old Mark Turton, of Palmer, that was towing a trailer heading southbound on the highway, Peters said. The two vehicles came to a stop in the road, blocking both lanes, Peters said.

Castle and two passengers in his car were taken to Providence Alaska Medical Center with minor injuries, Peters said.

Troopers said the highway was closed in both directions for about three hours.
