The father of an injured Anchorage firefighter says his son fell from a ladder during training

The father of a 29-year-old Anchorage firefighter seriously injured during training Monday said his son was in critical but stable condition at a local hospital Wednesday.

Ben Schultz, a firefighter and paramedic, fell off a ladder during routine training at Anchorage Fire Station 5, said Jeff Schultz.

The Anchorage Fire Department's Deputy Chief of Operations Jodie Hettrick said during a press conference Tuesday that Ben Schultz was injured at 4:15 p.m. Monday. Fellow firefighters immediately came to Schultz's aid when he was injured and took him to a local hospital, she said.

The fire department has released few details about the incident.

Hettrick said what led up to the firefighter's injuries is being looked into, and AFD plans to release more information later this week or early next week. Another spokesperson reiterated those statements Wednesday night.

Ben Schultz has worked with the fire department for six years. His father, Jeff Schultz, is a decades-long, official photographer for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

"The Schultz family is grateful for the outpouring of support from our friends and especially the AFD family. We are blessed and very well cared for," Jeff Schultz said in an email. "We very much covet and appreciate your prayers for Ben's survival and recovery."
