Inmate dies at Alaska's Goose Creek prison

A 60-year-old inmate at Goose Creek Correctional Center in the Valley died Saturday, the second prisoner to die in an Alaska jail this year.

A Saturday evening statement from the Department of Corrections said that Daniel Mark Brusehaber summoned staff through a call button that day at 10:07 a.m., saying he was "having a hard time breathing."

Correctional officers and medical staff started life-saving measures at the scene, according to the DOC.

"Emergency responders arrived but (Brusehaber) was pronounced dead at 11:16  a.m.," the statement said.

The department did not offer a cause of death. The death will be reviewed by the Alaska State Troopers and the State Medical Examiner Office, which is standard procedure for all inmate deaths.  The newly created Professional Conduct Unit will conduct an internal investigation.

Brusehaber had been in jail since April 4, on a probation violation stemming from a DUI charge.

Brusehaber is the second Alaskan to die in custody of the DOC this year. On  Jan. 10, Nina Amigale Alexie, 22, was found dead of an apparent suicide in her cell at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center in Eagle River.
