Fred Meyer security guard stabbed in the neck; suspect in custody

A security guard at the Midtown Anchorage Fred Meyer was stabbed in the neck when confronting a man suspected of stealing merchandise from the store Sunday evening, Anchorage police said.

Other staff members at the store held the man until police arrived and took him into custody, said Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

The incident happened just after 5 p.m. at the Fred Meyer at the intersection of Northern Lights Boulevard and the New Seward Highway, a busy shopping destination for a broad swath of Anchorage residents.

The employee, who was not named by police, was taken to a local hospital and was "conscious and breathing," wrote Castro in an email.

Police took the suspect, who was also not named Sunday night, to APD headquarters for questioning.
