Cause of fatal Glacier Bay capsizing still unknown; 2 victims identified

The two people who died when their boat capsized Monday in Glacier Bay have been identified by the National Park Service as investigators try to determine what happened.

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve spokesman Tom VandenBerg said that the two men who died were 75-year-old Larry Roger McWilliams of Oregon and his son, 48-year-old Gary Roger McWilliams of California.

The men were among six people who went into the water when their boat, identified by the U.S. Coast Guard as the 27-foot craft Invader, rolled over and sank in the bay without a mayday call Monday evening about 10 miles from park headquarters.

Several boats responded after one of the survivors was spotted ashore on nearby Strawberry Island. Three others were also rescued; one was flown to Juneau's Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment, while the others suffered mild hypothermia.

VandenBerg said the Park Service didn't plan to identify the survivors of the sinking. Initial signs suggested that not all of the people aboard the Invader were wearing life jackets, he said, but it wasn't clear whether that included the two who died.

"It does appear that at least some of them did not have flotation devices," VandenBerg said.
