The Rewind: Service, Dimond claim football wins; UAA and UAF volleyball standouts earn GNAC honors

Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. The 2024 season for high school flag and tackle football saw some dominant performances and exciting finishes while several other fall sports continued to get underway. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Fairbanks cross country and volleyball teams opened the 2024 season. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.

Headlines and highlights

On a night where the Service high school football team struggled to consistently move the ball on offense through the air, the Cougars inserted junior Austin French under center as a wildcat quarterback with just under 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. They were trailing visiting Chugiak and French helped lead them to a hard-fought 6-3 victory .

Up to that moment, the only points in the game came on a 23-yard field goal from the Mustangs kicker in the final seconds just before halftime following a near scoreless first half. Service transitioned to a predominantly rushing-based attack once French took over. He marched the offense nearly the length of the field on a 95-yard and 21-play drive that he capped off by punching the ball across the goal line from two yards out on fourth and goal.

An unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt by Service gave Chugiak a chance to potentially mount a game-tying or even game-winning drive with just over three minutes left on the clock. The Mustangs advanced the ball 30 yards on seven plays past midfield and into Cougar territory before junior Skyler Bottorff iced the game and secured the decisive victory for his team by tipping a pass to himself for a drive-ending interception.

“It’s cool to play with my team, without them, I wouldn’t be here,” Bottorff said.

On Saturday afternoon elsewhere in Anchorage, the Cook Inlet Conference clash between South Anchorage and Juneau-Douglas featured more than four times as many points, all of which were scored by the home team. The Wolverines notched their first win of the season and on their home turf in dominant fashion with a 42-0 shutout of the Huskies.

“After losing to Bartlett, they came on the bus saying ‘We lost this game but we are good and we do believe,’ ” South head coach John Lewis said. “This whole week they believed in their prep work that they could beat Juneau because they knew it would be physical and we’re physical for as small as we are.”

Leading the charge for South on offense was senior quarterback Cole Yarrington, who had a hand in scoring each of the teams first four touchdowns with three coming through the air and one on the ground. While he connected with three different receivers on his passing scores, his most popular and potent target was junior wide receiver Landon Drumm, who finished with six catches for 119 receiving yards and a 61-yard touchdown to score the first points of the game. The Wolverines leading receiver for the game, however, senior Caleb Doerr with 128 receiving yards on five catches including a 50-yard score.

“We were really hungry after those first two losses, we knew we were good all along and just needed to put it all together and fix little things,” Yarrington said. “(Drumm and I) work together every day, putting in extra hours and have a pretty good connection.”

Several teams around the state either hosted or hit the road to face out of state opponents and the only one from the Division I level to emerge victorious was Dimond who remained undefeated after an exciting 40-39 win over Linfield Christian down in Temecula, California. The Lynx were powered by junior star quarterback Cayden Pili who led his team back from a double-digit deficit with three scoring drives in the fourth quarter.

Pili is an amazing, dynamic football player and had a great game but the best is yet to come,” Dimond coach Brian Yim said in a statement. “He just finished his sixth varsity game ever but always keeps it pretty cool. The completions he made, and the windows he was able to fit the ball into were amazing.”

Pili had a hand in four of Dimond’s five touchdowns — three passing and one rushing — and four of their five successful two-point conversion attempts. His late-game heroics were capped off when he connected with junior receiver Everett Monteil for an 11-yard touchdown on fourth down and then senior receiver Alex Borke for the go-ahead two-point play with less than 10 seconds left on the clock.

“While it may seem cliche, our offensive line have been are best performing group all season,” Yim stated. “These boys play smart, and aggressive. They take pride in what they do and I love it. Jeremiah Seve, Thomas Adams, James Luaao, Daven Nysta, Dansel Anselmo, and Tristan Alenepi. Our game plan was to lean on our bigs up front and use our size advantage and it paid off in the end.”

In flag football action, West and South continued to prove to be the teams to beat this past week as both emerged with each program’s undefeated records intact. The Wolverines returned home from their trip out of state and defeated East 16-6 and handed the previously unbeaten Wasilla Warriors their first loss in a 30-6. While the Eagles weren’t able to keep their shutout streak alive after giving up six points to Eagle River on Saturday in a blowout win, they still have yet to have a game be decided by less than three scores.

“It’s about the commitment we have on the defensive end,” West head coach Antonio Wyche said. “We want to shut people out, we don’t want people to score on us and it’s like a motivational thing for us.”

They began the week with a 24-0 shutout of perennial powerhouse Dimond on a rainy Tuesday night led by explosive passing performance from senior quarterback Ariel Misa who three for 206 yards and four touchdowns. On Saturday, she had 300 passing yards and another hat trick through the air and added another on the ground.

Misa’s favorite and most potent target in both games was Wyche’s daughter, Re’Zhanai, who had 108 receiving yards and a pair of scores against Dimond and 163 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the 34-6 win over Eagle River.

“My connection is really strong with my receivers and my running backs,” Misa said. “They all played good and I loved seeing them score and get excited in the end zone.”

Out on the trails, the annual ASD Class Races took place on the Delaney Park Strip this past Thursday in which distance runners competed against their peers in the same grade from across the CIC. Among the standouts was Bettye Davis East Anchorage junior Rosie Conway, who recorded the fastest time by any female in any grade with a time of 11:08. On the boys side, the fastest time recorded was by another Thunderbird, sophomore Katahdin Staples with a mark of 9:31

On the college scene, the UAA and UAF cross-country teams faced off for the first time this season in the annual Seawolf Throwdown at Kincaid Park this past Saturday. While the visiting Nanooks swept both team titles, the top finishers featured a runner from each program. On the men’s side, UAA junior John Peckham covered the 8K course in 25:54 while UAF senior Kendal Kramer won the women’s 6K race in a time of 20:42.

“The first race of the year is always interesting because you get your first look at how everyone does in competition,” UAA head coach Chas Davis said in a statement. “I was happy to see John win the men’s race in his first race back from an injury he suffered in the spring. I was also pleased with (women’s third-place finisher) Nell (Baker)’s run today to lead our women. I was pleasantly surprised by a number of our runners today and am excited for the rest of the season.”

The UAA volleyball team got its 2024 campaign underway out of state in Hawaii where the Seawolves played three teams in two days and went 1-2 with the Seawolves lone victory coming Thursday over Hawaii Pacific 3-1 (25-10, 25-13, 14-25, 25-18) after getting swept in straight sets by Chaminade.

“We played well tonight after a tough match against Chaminade,” UAA head coach Stacie Meisner said in a statement. “We know when we take care of the ball, we can be dangerous, and we have some offensive weapons for our setters to choose from. Larssen (Anderson) especially had a terrific day, and it’s great seeing her on the court again after her injury last season.”

UAA came up just short of establishing a win streak Friday in a 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-11) loss to Hawaii Hilo. Senior outside hitter Katie Birtcil-Tipton led the Sewolves with 15 kills and 18 digs while fellow senior, setter Kadyn Osborne, led the team with 28 assists and collected 10 digs as well.

Both GNAC player of the week honorees for volleyball hailed from University of Alaska schools with Anchorage outside hitter Anderson receiving offensive recognition after averaging 2.17 kills and 2.92 points per set on .380 hitting in the Seawolves’ three matches at the Alaska/Hawaii Challenge. Meanwhile, Fairbanks’ Ainsley Smith received defensive honors for leading the Nanooks in digs per set with a mark of 2.58 over three matches in Hawaii. She recorded 14 digs in four sets against Chaminade and another nine in her team’s first win against Hawaii Pacific.

“Ainsley had a great weekend in Hawaii,” UAF head volleyball coach Brian Scott said in a statement. “Very excited for her to receive this recognition. Ainsley has spent many hours working on becoming a great defender while on the court. It is nice to see those efforts paying off.”

Alaska stars shining Outside

For the second year in a row, Anchorage’s Brandon Pili defied the odds that often come with being a former undrafted free agent by making the Miami Dolphins initial 53-man roster coming off another strong showing over the course of the preseason. In three exhibition contests, he recorded five total tackles including two solos and two for a loss, a sack and two quarterback hits. While he is listed as the primary backup nose tackle to Benito Jones, there’s a chance that he could make his first career regular season start with the fifth-year veteran currently dealing with an injury this week.

A pair of former Alaska high school football standouts helped the University of Nevada-Reno football team to a 28-26 over Troy University on Saturday. Redshirt senior defensive tackle Thomas Witte of Anchorage recorded three total tackles, including a solo takedown for a loss of two yards. On offense, senior tight end Jace Henry of Fairbanks found the end zone for the second week in a row on a 17-yard touchdown reception and finished with three catches for 31 receiving yards.

Anchorage’s Mai Mateaki helped the Air Force service academy’s women’s soccer team to its best start since 2003 this past week by improving to 3-0. With her first career two-goal performance in the Falcon’s 3-0 shutout win over the University of Hawaii at Manoa and former teammate Tatum Porter last Thursday, the former Dimond star and 2024 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year was named Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Week.

Anchorage’s Deuce Zimmerman led the Western New Mexico University football team in receiving yards in the Mustangs 41-3 season-opening win over the University of Texas-Permian Basin this past Saturday. The former East high star wideout caught a pair of passes and finished with 46 yards including a long of 35.
