Early morning on Good Friday, hundreds of parishioners gathered at their home parishes and walked to Anchorage's Town Square, praying the stations of the cross as they went. Good Friday is a Christian holiday that commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.
About 135 people met at West Anchorage's Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral and walked a sometimes slippery four miles to downtown. The parish has a large Hispanic population and they alternated between English and Spanish as they sang and prayed during the walk.
At Town Square, Archbishop Roger Schwietz greeted the parishioners and led the last three stations of the cross, which tell the story of Jesus' death on the cross, his removal from the cross and his burial.
