The first 12 miles of Denali National Park road were plowed and opened to motorists recently. The open portion of the road starts near Mile 237 of the Parks Highway and ends at the Mountain Vista parking area near the Savage River campground. There, the road is closed to motorized vehicles, but skiers, bikers, snowshoers and hikers can continue. Park spokesperson Kris Fister said mushers also use the trails in the area.
On Tuesday, Feb. 17, scenic loops were walkable on packed snow in the area of the Mountain Vista lot. In addition to driving the road, visitors can go to the Murie Science and Learning Center, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Continued opening of that section of road depends on the weather. Visitors are advised to call Denali National Park at 907-683-9532 for up-to-date information before visiting.
Fister said she expects the road will be opened to Teklanika Rest Area at Mile 30 sometime in April.
