Hardy souls jump into the harbor to raise money for the American Cancer Society at the 2015 Polar Bear Jump-Off on Saturday, Jan. 17, in Seward.
More than two dozen teams or individuals entertained the crowd with costumes and antics as members of the Seward Fire Department and Seward Ambulance Corps looked after them on the dock and in the water. Earlier, rain dampened enthusiasm for the parade from downtown to the harbor, but those who turned out along the route were rewarded with ample supplies of candy tossed from vehicles bearing jumpers.
As time for the midday Jump-Off approached, precipitation slacked off and the sun even broke through for a bit. The 30th annual Jump-Off was bookended with fundraising events Thursday through Sunday, including a poker tournament, various suppers and feeds, a pool tournament, auctions, shows, a children's winter carnival (indoors), a book signing by musher Dan Seavey, and a hair cut-off to donate locks to children with cancer.
