Anglers will get a chance to turn silver into gold Saturday at Ship Creek.
The inaugural Coho Rodeo will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Anchorage’s downtown fishery, with $1,000 going to the person who catches the biggest silver salmon.
The event is being organized by the Bait Shack (212 W. Whitney Road), which will serve as derby headquarters. Derby tickets -- $20 per angler -- must be purchased there prior to fishing.
Cash prizes will be awarded to those who catch the six heaviest silvers, and there will also be merchandise prizes for the smallest fish and the first fish entered.
All participants -- both local and out-of-state residents -- must have a 2021 State of Alaska sport fishing license. Fishing by proxy will not be allowed.
Proceeds from the Coho Rodeo will go to two Alaska non-profit organizations, the Alaska RiteCare Foundation and the Alaska Sport Fishing Association.
