The NHL truly gets under way tonight, so here's the list of Alaska-connected players on NHL rosters, according to the folks at league headquarters.
And by connected, we mean guys who either are from here or played here -- not just some dude who came up and fished the Kenai in the summer. And, granted, St. Louis Blues forward D.J. King is a stretch -- though he did play five games for the Alaska Aces in 2005-06.
In any event, here they are:
Calgary Flames -- former UAA Seawolves winger Curtis Glencross.

Tough news for Alaska Aces winger Josh Soares is great news for the Aces: The Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League released Soares on Tuesday, which means he should be headed here.
And he brings serious credentials as the Aces' leading scorer last season: 36 goals, All-ECHL and All-Rookie honors.
Headed down to Sullivan Arena soon to check in at Aces practice and confirm Soares is headed here. (Aces coach Keith McCambridge confirmed Soares is on the way).

Good news for center Nate Thompson of Anchorage -- the New York Islanders picked him up off waivers, which would seem to enhance his chances of starting the season in the NHL.
The Boston Bruins placed Thompson on waivers Tuesday.
And here's the most encouraging thing for Thompson about the move to Long Island -- the Isles' rookie coach is Scott Gordon, who was Thompson's bench boss with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. Thompson captained the Baby Bruins last season, his third as a pro.

The New York Rangers have announced that center Scott Gomez of Anchorage this season will wear an 'A' as an alternate captain -- so will free-agent newcomer Markus Naslund -- and that center Chris Drury will captain the team.
This is the first time Gomez, 28, has been an NHL captain of any sort -- he debuted in the league with the New Jersey Devils in 1999.
Drury replaces Jaromir Jagr, the previous captain who is back playing in Russia.
And speaking of abroad, Gomez and company -- including second-year center Brandon Dubinsky of Anchorage and former UAF Nanooks winger Aaron Voros -- open the NHL season Saturday in Prague, Czech Republic, against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

For what it's worth, the UAA Seawolves were picked to finish last in the WCHA in a couple of polls released Wednesday.
The media poll released by the Capital Times in Madison, Wis. and the annual WCHA coaches poll released by the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald were exactly the same, right down to a fourth-place tie between Minnesota and Wisconsin.
UAA has finished last three straight seasons, so the results were hardly shocking.
The media poll also includes preseason predictions for Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and All-League First Team. The coaches poll has some of that.

A couple of former UAA Seawolves played against each other in an NHL exhibition game on Friday night, and the more experienced of the two enjoyed the outcome more than the relative newbie.
Former green and gold sniper Curtis Glencross, a bonafide NHLer, bagged one goal and one assist for Calgary in an 8-2 demolition of the visiting Florida Panthers, who included erstwhile UAA captain Luke Beaverson. Curtis went +1 with three shots, one hit and two blocked shots. Beav, a rookie, only played 4:07 and was -1 with three hits and a blocked shot. In a head-scratcher, the Panthers dressed nine defensemen. And no, Alaska Aces fans, former Aces tender Chris Beckford-Tseu did not take the pain for the Panthers -- those eight goals all belonged to Tomas Vokoun.
