Melissa DeVaughn was raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and is a 1990 graduate of Virginia Tech. She worked at the Roanoke Times from 1990 until 1995, taking a six-month break in 1993 to hike the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine.
In the summer of 1995, she moved to Alaska to continue reporting, working first at the Kenai Peninsula Clarion then, in late 1996, joining the staff at the Anchorage Daily News. She has worked as a copy editor, features writer and, for the past three years, as an outdoors reporter.
