A wolf attack has Eagle River residents on heightened alert this weekend.
Anchorage police report that a dog was attacked by a wolf early Sunday morning, according to KTUU-Channel 2. Police dispatch received a call about 4 a.m. from a person seeking permission to shoot the wolf, which had attacked a dog before dragging it away.
The dog was found, later, but according to the story, the wolf had not yet been located.
It wasn't the first recent wolf attack. Eagle River residents told KTUU that other dogs had been attacked by wolves as well, although police had not confirmed those claims.
Earlier this year, state wildlife biologists ended up getting involved with hunting down a pack of wolves in northwest Anchorage that had been terrorizing animals and leaving their human owners rather anxious. There were believed to be four to six wolves in the pack.
The wolves were concentrated in the Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson area, not far from Eagle River. While there exists a healthy moose population for wolves to kill in the area, that pack had developed a taste for dogs, according to interviews last February with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
