Former Bartlett High shot putter Jordan Clarke and former Eielson High long jumper Janay DeLoach each finished sixth in their events Saturday at a Diamond League track and field meet in Shanghai, China, that served as the first outdoor international competition this season for both athletes.
DeLoach, 30, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, jumped 21 feet, 3.25 inches on her first jump and scratched in her other two attempts. Only the top four athletes in the 10-woman field advanced after the third round and earned three more jumps. Serbia's Ivana Spanovic won with a leap of 22-9.75.
DeLoach earlier this year finished fourth in the World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon.
Clarke, 30, reached 66-7.25 on his first effort and scratched on his remaining two. Only the top four men after three rounds advanced. American Kurt Roberts topped the 11-thrower field at 70-2.50.
Both DeLoach and Clarke earned $2,000, the standard prize money for sixth place in a Diamond League event.
The Diamond League is an annual circuit overseen by the International Association of Athletics Federations and draws the world's best track and field athletes. The Diamond League features 14 competitions this season, including the Prefontaine Classic, set for May 27-28 in Eugene, Oregon.
Both Clarke and DeLoach are gearing up for the U.S. Olympic Trials, July 1-10 in Eugene.
