2 hurt in South Anchorage four-plex fire

Two people were injured in a fire at a South Anchorage four-plex Friday morning, as more than a dozen crews responded to the scene.

Anchorage Fire Department Chief Dennis LeBlanc said crews arrived at the three-story building, on the 7800 block of Lumbis Avenue off the Old Seward Highway near East 76th Avenue, shortly after the initial 911 call came in around 10:30 a.m.

Deputy Chief Jodie Hettrick said a total of 15 units ultimately responded to the fire, which was contained to a single unit of the building. The blaze was brought under control about 20 minutes after the fire crews arrived. Hettrick declined to discuss the extent of the reported injuries.

"We did transport two patients from the scene to the hospital," Hettrick said. "We're just doing cleanup and overhaul to confirm everything is out."

Fire crews were still working to determine the fire's cause, as well as the extent of any damages it caused. Hettrick said Red Cross of Alaska staff were en route to assist the injured patients, who were also the only two people believed to be displaced by the fire.
