This week in Anchorage: Young talent, free museum day, Dining by Design

Music

ACC winner's recital

The best free music in Alaska will flow from the stage of the UAA Arts Building Recital Hall at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 14. Young winners of several local music contests will perform vocal and instrumental music. They'll include the winners of the Anchorage Concert Chorus' Vocal Scholarship Competition, who will be performing for the judges earlier that day. Over the years we've watched the winners continue with serious careers in music, and the annual recital often shows them at their best. As always, admission is free and a reception will follow.

Museums

Bargains at the museum

In anticipation of tourist season, the Anchorage Museum store is clearing out old stock with a sale. Select items will be discounted 40 percent Friday-Sunday, May 13-15, and museum members will get an additional discount. Books, art, games, jewelry, wearables and more items by some of Alaska's most artistic craftsfolks are on the shelves. More savings are available on Wednesday, May 18, when Wells Fargo will cover the cost of everyone's admission in honor of International Museum Day.

Architecture

Dine by Design

The annual Alaska Design Forum fundraiser will take place on the night of Friday, May 13. Described as "an evening of interactive design, immersive entertainment, and a curated dining experience," the Dining by Design event will feature food by Robert Lewis, co-founder and executive chef of Pangea Restaurant, the downtown eatery striving to become Anchorage's farm-to-table restaurant. The event takes place at the Bunker Annex in Kincaid Park. More information and reservations are available at alaskadesignforum.org.
