After a hit-and-run in East Anchorage, both drivers fled the scene, police say

Both drivers fled the scene of a hit-and-run in East Anchorage on Wednesday afternoon, according to police, who are still looking for the driver whose car was hit.

Police responded to Fourth Avenue and Boniface Parkway for the crash at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses reported that a pickup truck was heading northbound on Boniface when the driver ran a red light at Fourth and hit a Chevrolet HHR that was turning onto Fourth from Boniface, said Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Renee Oistad in an email.

The truck driver -- later identified as 25-year-old Erik McMorris -- kept heading northbound on Boniface into Mountain View. Officers eventually found the empty truck in an alley between North Park Street and North Klevin Street. McMorris was found walking near Irwin Street and Thompson Avenue. Besides being cited for running a red light, Oistad said, McMorris was also charged with leaving the scene of an injury collision and not having insurance.

Meanwhile, police haven't found the driver of the HHR, who left behind a passenger who was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.

"The driver of the HHR ran from the scene," Oistad said. "He has not been contacted by police -- that process is ongoing."
