Charges: Tuluksak man took ax to police officer's door, threatened to kill him

A Tuluksak man threatened to kill a tribal police officer last week while trying to cut through the front door of the officer's family home with an ax, an investigation by Alaska State Troopers found.

On Monday morning, Andrew Peter, 24, was still facing the same burglary, assault and criminal mischief charges on which he was initially arrested, based on court records. Staff at the Bethel district attorney's office said last week that a decision on additional charges was pending.

In a criminal complaint against Peter, Alaska state trooper Christopher Worland wrote that Peter had threatened a tribal police officer late Wednesday evening.

"Andrew stated he had a rifle, his friends have pistols and they were going to go after the (tribal police officers) so they better watch out," Worland wrote.

Another tribal police officer, Wilfred Waska, told police he was in his home with his girlfriend -- as well as children ranging in age from 5 months to 9 years old -- at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday when Peter showed up and began striking the door with an ax until he called other TPOs for help.

"Waska tied the door shut but was afraid (Peter) was going to break into his residence and kill him or his family," Worland wrote.

A responding officer saw Peter using the ax to hit the door, but said he ran away after seeing backup arrive. An inspection of Waska's home revealed two ax marks on the front door, as well as other blows to the home's porch and siding.

Troopers received another account of the incident from a neighbor of Waska's, who said "she was woken up by a loud sound and saw, through her window, Andrew Peter banging on (Waska's) door with an ax while yelling, 'I'll kill you. I will kill all of you,'" Worland wrote.

When troopers spoke with Peter at a local tribal office, he allegedly said he was drunk at the time.

"(Peter) advised he was intoxicated, mad that the TPOs were not doing their jobs and he was trying to scare people," Worland wrote.

Court records show Peter was arraigned Friday in Bethel court, with a public defender appointed to represent him.
