Emmonak village officer charged with aiming gun at residents

The village public safety officer for Emmonak has been arrested by Alaska State Troopers for allegedly aiming a gun at residents last week.

Jay Levan, 68, was taken into custody without incident Wednesday in Anchorage following an investigation, according to a trooper dispatch. He was held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on three counts of third-degree assault, as well as one count of official misconduct.

Troopers said in an initial dispatch, which didn't mention Levan's name, that he was "no longer in the village" after troopers received word of the Friday incident a day later.

"The complainant alleged that (Levan) pointed a firearm at three adult male residents of Emmonak," troopers wrote. "Troopers responded and have made contact with all involved parties."

Levan, who also serves as the chief of Emmonak's volunteer fire department, was among the first responders to a March fire that destroyed five buildings and caused an estimated $3 million in damage.

Levan is the only VPSO in Emmonak, according to an online list maintained by troopers. He was hired by the Association of Village Council Presidents.
