Soldotna wrestler's Olympic wrestling journey ends in semifinals

Soldotna's Michaela Hutchison eliminated a fellow Alaskan before losing in the semifinals of Sunday's USA Wrestling Olympic Trials in Iowa City, Iowa.

Hutchison defeated Anchorage's Dajan Treder by technical fall in the preliminaries of the women's 117-pound division at Carver Hawkeye Arena at the University of Iowa.

She won her quarterfinal match 3-0 but was on the wrong end of a 7-3 decision in her semifinal match against Army wrestler Whitney Conder.

The result marked the second straight Olympic Trials semifinal loss for Hutchison, a 26-year-old assistant coach at McKendree University in Illinois. She lost in the semis at the 2012 trials too.

Hutchison was one of three Alaska women who qualified for the trials, which decided America's team for August's Summer Olympics in Brazil. Treder and Big Lake's Rachael Shannon were both eliminated in the prelims.
