Anchorage brothers face attempted murder charges in Valley shooting

One of two brothers wanted in connection with a Caswell Lakes shooting last week has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, according to court documents, with the other still being sought by troopers.

Charles Ganoe, 28, was charged with first-degree assault in addition to the attempted murder charge. Alaska State Troopers had released images from surveillance video of two suspects, as well as a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, sought in connection with the shooting north of Willow.

Charles Ganoe's brother, 26-year-old Nicholas Ganoe, was still wanted Monday in connection with the shooting; a warrant was issued for his arrest on the same charges his brother now faces. Troopers said in a Monday update to the case that Nicholas Ganoe is considered "armed and dangerous," and anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call 907-352-5401.

According to a criminal complaint against Charles Ganoe, homeowner Lloyd Leach called 911 to report the shooting at about 2:45 p.m. Friday.

"Leach reported that an unknown male came to his front door and when Leach opened the door, the male started shooting through the doorway and the door," Assistant District Attorney Katholyn Runnels wrote. "Leach was hit in the hip and fell backwards to the floor. Leach returned fire with his own handgun as the male backed away from the door."

Leach was subsequently hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Surveillance video from his home showed the alleged shooter returning to the Tahoe, with the second suspect getting out and briefly approaching the home before returning and driving off. Tips troopers received from the public linked Charles Ganoe with the SUV, the charging documents said.

"Troopers contacted Ganoe and he admitted to being involved with the shooting," Runnels wrote. Charles Ganoe also told troopers his brother had given him a .45-caliber handgun and that Nicholas was carrying a .375 revolver, according to the charging document.

"Nicholas had stopped on the way back from Willow to dispose of the guns in the woods," Runnels wrote.

A subsequent section of the charging document was redacted.

Charles Ganoe was arraigned Saturday afternoon in Anchorage jail court; a judge assigned him a public defender and set his bail at $50,000, with a third-party custodian required for release. An Alaska inmate database listed him in custody at the Anchorage Correctional Complex Monday afternoon.
