84 people apply for Anchorage School District superintendent job

Anchorage School Board President Kameron Perez-Verdia said Monday that 84 people had applied to become the next superintendent of the Anchorage School District, though he said he would not yet disclose specifics on who wants the job.

"We were very happy with the size of the pool and the experience and quality of the pool of candidates," Perez-Verdia said. However, he said, "We want to make sure we're keeping the pool confidential at this point. ... I can tell you that we're pleased with the number of applicants from Alaska."

The application window closed March 14. Perez-Verdia said School Board members are reviewing the applications, as is the president of the national search firm hired by the board.

Ed Graff will remain the superintendent through the end of June. Perez-Verdia announced in October that the School Board would not renew Graff's three-year contract and would look for a new superintendent.

Perez-Verdia said School Board members will conduct interviews this month and will later release a list of top candidates. According to a preliminary timeline posted on the school district's website, the board will hold on-site visits with the finalists at the end of April. The board will announce the next superintendent May 13.
