Unusually warm, wet weather predicted for Southcentral Alaska

The National Weather Service warned people in Southcentral Alaska that they may see localized flooding next week as an unusually warm air mass moves across the state.

A mass of "very warm and moist subtropical air" will cause temperatures to rise well above freezing on Sunday and are expected to persist for the rest of the week, NWS wrote in a special weather statement.

The forecast applies to Anchorage, the Matanuska Valley and the western Kenai Peninsula, from as far north as Cantwell to Valdez and Cordova.

Temperatures may remain in the 40s, even overnight, across Anchorage and the surrounding areas, according to NWS.

"Localized flooding will be a concern … the potential impacts for the early to middle of next week appear to be ponding of rain and snowmelt on roads," particularly in urban areas, NWS writes.

"An additional threat may come from localized break-up of frozen streams and rivers through the week," according to the agency.
