Man shot to death after reported home invasion, Anchorage police say

One man died by gunfire early Thursday in what was reported as a shooting after a home invasion, Anchorage police said.

At least three people were in a home on Orchard Place in South Anchorage when one of them opened fire on the invader, according to Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

Police were notified of the home invasion shortly after 4:30 a.m., they wrote in a release Thursday morning. When officers arrived, they found a dead man with gunshot wounds outside the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Castro would not release the man's name or more details about his death, citing an ongoing investigation.

At the scene, APD Sgt. Ryan Rockom said that several people, including the homeowner, were taken to police headquarters to be interviewed. No other injuries were reported in the shooting.

"Beyond that we've got no motive, no nothing," Rockom said.

According to Rockom, police hadn't established that the dead man was a home invader.

"We don't know -- it's not clear what the relationship is between the deceased and the home resident," he said.

Rockom said at least one of the alleged home invaders fled the scene, but it was not known whether on foot or in a vehicle. Castro said later Thursday that the status of the person who left wasn't clear.

"We don't know for sure if that person was a home invader or someone who was at the home, but we do know for sure that there was someone who had seen and witnessed the event who was not there when we arrived," Castro said.

Police had no descriptions associated with the person who left the scene.
