Chugiak, Dimond advance to CIC hockey championship

The Cook Inlet Conference regular-season champions won't get a chance to win the CIC tournament.

Chugiak knocked off top-seeded West 3-1 in a semifinal game Thursday at Ben Boeke Arena. The upset puts the Mustangs in Saturday's 6:30 tournament championship game against Dimond, a 4-0 winner over Eagle River in the other semifinal.

West and Eagle River will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday for third place.

All four teams will advance to the state tournament Feb. 11-13 at the Menard Sports Center in Wasilla. The remaining games will decide how the Anchorage teams are seeded at the state tourney.

Chugiak, which finished fourth in the CIC during the regular season, got its first win of the season over West thanks to two third-period goals by Zachary Krajnik and a second-period, power-play goal by Daniel Casey.

Sullivan Mack scored West's only goal late in the third period.

At the McDonald Center, Shaun Mitchell had a pair of goals for Dimond, including an unassisted goal in the second period.
