Seawolves guard Svejcar nets GNAC Player of the Week honor

Spencer Svejcar, whose 3-pointer with time running out forced overtime in the latest victory posted by the streaking UAA men's basketball team, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Svjecar racked up 41 points in wins last week over Montana State-Billings and UAF. The victories pushed UAA's winning streak to nine games and kept the Seawolves on top of the conference standings heading into a Thursday night road game against nationally ranked Western Oregon.

Svejcar, a 6-foot-4 guard from Arvada, Colorado, shot 56.5 percent from the field and 64.3 from 3-point range in the two games. He added nine rebounds and had just one turnover in 75 minutes of play.

He tallied 19 points, five rebounds and three assists in an 81-61 win over Billings. In a 100-91 overtime win over UAF, he chalked up a career-high 22 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Svejcar transferred to UAA this season after two seasons at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming. He's one of six Seawolves averaging double figures this season. Suki Wiggs leads the way with 24.0, followed by Brian McGill (14.3), Svejcar (13.2), Corey Hammell (13.1), Diante Mitchell (11.1) and Christian Leckband (10.8).

UAA is 25-4 overall and 8-0 in the GNAC. The Seawolves face No. 8 Western Oregon (14-2, 7-1) Thursday in Monmouth, Oregon, and Concordia (5-10, 3-5) Saturday in Portland.
