Overturned truck spills chemicals on Richardson Highway

A truck carrying chemicals went off the road and tipped over on the Richardson Highway on Friday.

According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, at noon Friday, a Lynden tractor-trailer went off the road at Mile 299 of the Richardson Highway, between Birch Lake and Delta Junction. No injuries were reported, said Ashley Adamczak, the Interior and TAPS unit manager.

An initial report from DEC said the tractor was carrying fuming nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid.

"There is a white vapor cloud emanating from the ruptured trailer," the report said.

As Adamczak explained, each chemical on its own could cause burning skin or respiratory irritation, but together they can react and become more dangerous.

"It gets hot, puts off an odor and you can see it," she said.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough's hazardous materials team is on the scene to evaluate the damage and remove the chemicals.

"The primary mission is public and responder safety from the vapor cloud coming off of it," Adamczak said.

The cause of the spill is under investigation.

Traffic was expected to slow, but the road wasn't completely closed. Lynden had two pilot cars to help with the flow of traffic, the DEC said.
