Boys prep basketball: Service, Dimond nab wins at Alaska Prep Shootout

The Alaska Prep Shootout boys basketball tournament tipped off Tuesday with wins by Service and Dimond at Dimond High.

Service beat Galena in Pool B and Dimond defeated Mt. Edgecumbe in Pool A.

The top two teams in each three-team pool will play in the championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday.

All games in the four-day tournament are played at Dimond.

Alaska Prep Shootout

Service 57, Galena 26

In a battle between Class 4A Service and Class 3A Galena, the Cougars handled the Hawks 57-26 in the tournament's opening game.

Service's Nathan Fromm led all scorers with 20 points on 9 of 16 shooting from the field. He added six assists, seven rebounds and five steals for an all around solid game for the Cougars.

Fromm entered the tournament coming off Tournament MVP honors in the Cougar Tip Off, which concluded Dec. 19.

Galena's bright spot was Gerad Wholecheese, who finished with eight points on 4 of 5 shooting.

Dimond 67, Mt. Edgecumbe 26

Luke Sherman went a perfect 4 of 4 from 3-point land to boost Dimond over Mt. Edgecumbe 67-26.

He finished with a team-high 12 points and Jesse Boese added 11, hitting three treys of his own.

Paul Bioff scored more than half of Mt. Edgecumbe's points finishing with 15 on 7 of 11 shooting.

Friday's games

7 p.m. — Soldotna vs. Service

8:30 p.m. — Dimond vs. West Valley

Unalaska 49, Lumen Christi 11

Unalaska's Tanner Leggett (11 points) matched Lumen Christi's total points on his own.

Balanced scoring by Leggett and Carter Price (8) lifted Unalaska over the Archangels in the Class 1A basketball game Wednesday.

Joey Brown had five points for Lumen Christi in the home loss.
