Doc Larson: Sophomores shine for Barrow, set up semifinal clash with Wasilla

Barrow sophomores Kamaka Hepa and Travis Adams both racked up double-doubles to highlight the first day of the Doc Larson Roundball Classic in Wasilla.

The big games from Hepa and Adams helped the Whalers beat the Lincoln Cardinals of Portland, Oregon, 67-57.

In other boys games, Juneau nipped West 63-62, Wasilla waltzed to a 62-43 win over Ambridge, Pennsylvania and the Coronado Cougars of Henderson, Nevada, edged Colony 80-72.

The Wasilla girls gave the home crowd something to cheer by beating Barrow 58-41. Coronado beat Lincoln 37-34 in the other girls game.

The tournament,which features eight boys teams and four girls teams, continues Friday.The big game is a semifinal showdown between the Barrow and Wasilla boys at 8:20 p.m..

Barrow boys 67, Lincoln 57

Kamaka Hepa amassed 26 points and 15 rebounds and Travis Adams piled up 20 points and 12 rebounds to power the Whalers.

Hepa, a center who is Alaska's premier prospect, nearly finished with a triple-double — he blocked nine shots.

Barrow won the game at the foul line, sinking 27 of 40 shots. Hepa was 16 of 20 and Adams was 10 of 15.

Jonah Pemberton's 22 points and Bryce Sloan's 14 led Lincoln.

Wasilla 62, Ambridge 43

Daniel Headdings made both of his attempts from 3-point range while sparking the Warriors with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals.

Isaac Houck supplied 10 points, five steals and five rebounds, Koby Burns dished eight assists and Kobe Brown and Reilly Devine each added 10 points for Wasilla.

Roman Shell tossed in 15 points to lead Ambridge.

Juneau boys 63, West 62

Juneau rallied in the fourth quarter to slip past West.

The Crimson Bears trailed 52-43 after three quarters but outscored West 20-10 in the final eight minutes for the win.

Leading the way for Juneau were Guy Bean with 20 points and seven rebounds and Bryce Swofford with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks.

Da'Zhon Wyche set the pace for West's balanced attack with 15 points and six assists. Sean Duffy, Hawken Wannemaker and Darian Lawson all scored 12 points, with Duffy grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.

Coronado boys 80, Colony 72

Coronado's Jake Desjardins poured in 29 points and Kennedy Koehler provided 15 points and 10 rebounds to take down Colony.

Colony led 37-34 at the half after shooting 55 percent from the field, but cooled off to 40 percent in the second half. Coronado shot 54 percent for the game.

Alex Nygard's 21 points and Anton Chamblee's 16 points sparked Colony.

Wasilla girls 58, Barrow 41

The Wasilla girls came on strong in the second half, outscoring Barrow 31-17 after earning a narrow 27-24 halftime lead.

The Warriors outscored Barrow 28-11 from the foul line, an effort that included Azlynn Brandenburg's 10-of-12 effort and McKenna Dinkel's 8-of-13 showing.

Brandenburg finished with 14 points and Dinkel with 10. Olivia Davies chipped in eight points and four steals for the Warriors.

Kuutuuq Danner netted 14 points for Barrow.

Coronado girls 37, Lincoln 34

Payton Caci scored 13 points and Aeryn Hawkins pulled down 11 rebounds for Coronado, which outscored Lincoln 19-8 in the fourth quarter.

Reed Hazard led Lincoln with 10 points.
