Hammell, Wiggs propel UAA men to big win over Northwest Indian College

Another high-scoring game for Suki Wiggs and another double-double for Corey Hammell carried the UAA men's basketball team to a lopsided victory over Northwest Indian College on Monday night.

The Seawolves rolled to a 108-67 win over a barnstorming team that isn't a member of a conference and doesn't belong to the NCAA or the NAIA.

The Eagles, who came to Anchorage after dropping a pair of games to UAF in Fairbanks, attend a tribal college in Bellingham, Washington. Their roster includes four Alaskans, including Kacy Green of Hooper Bay who provided five points and five rebounds Monday.

Though UAA controlled every aspect of the game at the Alaska Airlines Center, the Seawolves (9-4) couldn't shut down Mike Schjang Jr., a guard who drained seven 3-pointers while pouring in 33 points for the Eagles (0-16).

But Schjang was the lone double-figure scorer for Northwest Indian. UAA boasted four.

Hammell led the way with 24 points and 12 rebounds, a performance that marked his eighth double-double in 13 games this season. He was good on seven of eight field goal attempts and 10 of 12 free throws.

Wiggs added 21 points for his eighth straight game of 20 or more points.

Christian Leckband added 16 points and five rebounds, Taylor Thompson scored 10 points, Spencer Svejcar handed out a game-high six assists to go with eight points and Jackson McTier grabbed seven rebounds for the Seawolves.

Christian Nickerson of Fairbanks scored six points and Austin Miller of Bethel added four for the Eagles.

The game marked the end of the nonconference season for the Seawolves, although UAA returns to the court Saturday afternoon for the annual Alumni Game at 2 p.m.

The exhibition game is part of a busy weekend at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Things kick off Friday night with a meet-and-greet for fans, who from 6-7 p.m. can get autographs and photos with players from the men's team and the nationally ranked women's team.

Saturday features a triple-header that tips off with the Alumni Game and continues with the first two games of the women's Seawolf Hoops Classic. UAF will play UC San Diego at 5 p.m. and UAA will meet Cedarville at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, women's action continues with a 3:30 p.m. game between UAF and Cedarville and a 6 p.m. game between UAA and UC San Diego.
