Dimond continues riflery dominance with another CIC championship

Dimond won the Cook Inlet Conference riflery championship for the fourth straight year, outshooting West by 38 points Saturday.

Eagle River sophomore Ashtin Bennett won the individual title by one point with a score of 287. Jasmine Kobayashi finished second with a score of 286 in tiebreakers over Service's Clara Veelman, who finished in third with 286.

Dimond also won the traveling trophy, known as the "Big Ugly" by the coaches, for the seventh straight season. The trophy goes to the team with the most points at the end of the year.

This year, West hosted the championship at its big gymnasium, which allowed the competition to finish in one day instead of two. It also offered a better setting for fans to watch — a rarity in the sport.

"What was really cool, is for the first time since I've been a coach, the students families, friends could set up in the bleachers and watch," Dimond coach John Snead said. "… They got to see it for the first time. Sit there and watch it like basketball, basically."
