Snowmachine carrying 3 goes into open water near Bethel

BETHEL -- A snowmachine carrying an adult and two children fell into an open hole on a slough near Bethel on Tuesday, but all three managed to get out of the water, Bethel Search and Rescue said Thursday.

For weeks, the group has been warning winter travelers of open holes along the Kuskokwim River and nearby waters, particularly along Straight Slough, where the snowmachine went in.

"Major Danger in Straight Slough!" the search group's post Thursday said.

The snowmachine was lost in the water. Boaters have been dragging the slough trying to find it.

Volunteers are needed to help mark the danger zone, Bethel SAR said. Travelers should avoid Straight Slough and use a trail around Joe Pete's Bend to get to Church Slough.

Meanwhile, on the frozen main river, some people have started to drive trucks. Bethel SAR said the ice thickness was 10 to 12 inches between Bethel and the downriver village of Napaskiak. Some of that is snow mixed with ice, which isn't as strong.

"This thickness is considered marginal for trucks by experienced travelers," the group said. "You can get away with it but please travel with extreme caution."
