Woman charged with attempted murder in Lower Kalskag shooting

A Lower Kalskag woman arrested in the Western Alaska village last week is accused of shooting a man after drinking and a dispute, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers said in a Sunday dispatch they were first informed of the 39-year-old man's shooting, which led them to arrest 23-year-old Raven Levi, at about 11:45 p.m. Friday.

A medical flight from Bethel, accompanied by a trooper and a village public safety officer, responded to the village of about 280 people, nearly 90 miles northeast of Bethel.

"Investigation reveals (Levi) shot the male victim in his midsection with a .44-caliber revolver," troopers wrote. "The victim was flown to Bethel and then to Anchorage for emergency medical treatment and is listed in serious condition."

According to a Sunday criminal complaint against Levi filed by troopers investigator Anthony Wiles, the victim said he and Levi had been drinking alcohol and talking at her home when she shot him "at close range in the chest area."

When troopers spoke with Levi, she said the victim resorted to violence first.

"Levi said (the victim) was beating her up by punching her multiple times in the stomach with his fists," Wiles wrote. "Levi said she was not hurt, she had no injuries, and she did not need medical attention. Levi declined to give any further statements to AST. Levi had no visible injuries to her body."

Wiles said a VPSO also overheard Levi tell a family member of hers that she shot the man because he was beating her up.

A local resident who responded to a call for help from Levi said she had given him another account of the shooting, which began with an argument between her and the wounded man.

"(The victim) pushed Levi against the wall and tried to hit her," Wiles wrote. "Levi went into a room and grabbed a firearm. When (he) approached Levi, she shot him after she told him to get out of the room."

After troopers obtained a search warrant for Levi's home, they found a Ruger Super Red Hawk Alaskan .44-caliber revolver containing four rounds, one of which had been fired.

"A dried red blood residue was observed on the cylinder and front sights of the cylinder," Wiles wrote.

Troopers took Levi into custody on one count of domestic-violence attempted murder. Levi's previous court record includes four fourth-degree assault convictions after guilty pleas, in a series of incidents dating back to February 2013.

After her arrest, Levi was taken to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center in Bethel, where she was arraigned Sunday. A statewide inmate database listed her as still in custody at the correctional center early Monday.
