Much of Alaska under weather watches and advisories Thursday

Much of Alaska was under weather watches and advisories Thursday night, although forecasters did not report any weather-related damage.

A Western Alaska storm was making its way out of the region by Thursday night after it dumped 6 to 12 inches of snow on much of the region, Fairbanks-based National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Hancock said.

Shortly before 9 p.m. he said the storm's low pressure center was over Nome and moving north.

Hancock said he hadn't heard of any reports of damage in Western Alaska.

In the Susitna Valley, a winter weather warning for heavy snow was set to expire by 6 a.m. Friday.

"It's been snowing hard up there," Anchorage-based NWS meteorologist Bill Ludwig said. According to Ludwig, NWS had a hard time gathering snow totals for the region, but in a 4 p.m. snow report about 15 miles away from Talkeetna, 3 inches had accumulated.

NWS forecast snow for the Mat-Su through Thanksgiving.

In Anchorage, a high wind warning expired without any known damage, according to Ludwig. The strongest gusts were reported at 78 miles per hour along Turnagain Arm and the Hillside. Strong wind was forecast for South and West Anchorage, NWS wrote in a public forecast.
