Winter storm advisories issued for Southcentral Alaska

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Susitna Valley starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, with as much as a foot of snow expected for the Parks Highway corridor north of Wasilla, forecasters said Saturday.

Advisories for heavy snow were also issued for Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley by the National Weather Service office in Anchorage, starting at 6 p.m. Sunday. The snow will start falling in the evening and last into the night, bringing low visibility and treacherous roads, forecasters said.

Anchorage is expected to see between 3 and 6 inches of snow, with the highest totals on the Hillside, said Shawn Baines, a NWS meteorologist.

Snowfall totals will be slightly higher in the Matanuska Valley, between 4 and 8 inches, Baines said. He said the most snow will fall up north in the Hatcher Pass area.

Along the Parks Highway corridor, from Houston to Talkeetna, residents are expected to see 8 inches to 1 foot of snow, Baines said.

"For most areas, it's going to be Sunday evening -- if you're (driving), expect snow-covered roads and low visibility," Baines said.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District closed five Susitna Valley schools Friday amid heavy snowfall and dangerous road conditions.
