Snow tapering off, but roads still icy in Southcentral

Anchorage and the Mat-Su could see a short reprieve from snow, which has caused dangerous road conditions for drivers across much of the area since Monday.

The National Weather Service isn't forecasting snow in Anchorage until late Wednesday and no snow in the Mat-Su until Thursday.

Tuesday saw more snow, more melting and more refreezing, as well as many traffic incidents. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Shannon McCarthy said crews stayed busy sanding and plowing, working on some areas twice.

"We have hit a few areas more than once today -- McHugh Creek to Girdwood on the Seward (Highway) and Rabbit Creek Road," McCarthy said. "Thankfully the temperatures have just been a little (lower) so snow is not adhering to the roadway as soon as it hits."

The Anchorage Police Department had responded to 30 vehicle accidents -- three of which involved injuries -- and 21 vehicles in distress by about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said.

The Parks Highway was also shut down at Mile 51 near Wasilla for about four hours after a semi-truck and pickup truck crashed, seriously injuring a married couple.

According to an online troopers dispatch, 72-year-old Carl Wilbur of Wasilla was headed southbound on the highway when he lost control of the semi-truck. The semi-truck jackknifed in the road and collided with a Ford F-150 driven by Beverly Marple.

Marple was trapped inside and suffered life-threatening injuries. Her husband, Allen Marple, was also seriously injured.
