Flag football: Chugiak, Bartlett, Dimond, East reach semifinals

Bartlett 18, West 13

Tala Lauvale scored three times Tuesday to rally Bartlett past West 18-13 in the Cook Inlet Conference flag football playoffs at West High.

West scored on the first play of the game on Alyssa Brown's 68-yard run to claim a 7-0 lead, but the Eagles didn't score again until the final two minutes.

Lauvale helped the Golden Bears to a 12-7 halftime lead, throwing a 35-yard pass to Danielle VanOrd for one touchdown and rushing five yards for another.

Lauvale's third touchdown, a 22-yard run, gave Bartlett an 18-7 lead and allowed the Golden Bears to survive late heroics by West's Rebecca Syrup. Syrup intercepted a pass and returned it to the 2-yard line, and on the first play from scrimmage she went two yards for the touchdown.

Bartlett ran down the clock after that to end West's season.

Bartlett will meet Dimond in a semifinal game Thursday at Dimond.

Dimond 31, South 12

Dimond came alive in the fourth quarter to come from behind for a 31-12 flag football playoff win over South.

South took the early lead with two touchdown passes from Anika Valdez, one to Carmen Carlson and the other to Taylor Lawson.

Dimond got on the scoreboard as time expired in the first half at Dimond Alumni Field on Megan Luther's 40-yard pass to Whitney Shapp.

"We have some young girls and they showed their playoff jitters," Dimond coach Kathleen Navarre said. "That touchdown at the end of the first half took a lot of pressure off. It was huge.

"You've gotta give South a lot of credit. They played a solid game. The game was much closer than the score."

The Lynx won it with four touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Luther rushed for two touchdowns, Tiffany Jackson ran 22 yards for a score and D'Avionn Rabb returned an interception to the end zone to lift Dimond.

Luther finished with 102 yards on 17 carries, Jackson rushed for 80 yards on 12 carries and added five flag pulls on defense, and Shapp came through with an interception to help send South to a season-ending loss.

"Credit Dimond's defense for making some key interceptions," South coach Bob Kirn said by email. "Our team played their hearts out in a very exciting game, and I'm so very proud of them."

Chugiak 32, Service 13

Carson Head rushed for 127 yards and Alexis Trombley passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to spark Chugiak's 32-13 win over Service in a CIC flag football game Tuesday in Chugiak.

Head's five carries included big runs of 81 and 38 yards.

Trombley's touchdown passes went to Head and Cerina Bush, who also rushed for a touchdown.

Eva Palmer contributed to Chugiak's point total by returning an interception 44 yards for a TD.

The loss ended the season for Service. Chugiak will travel to East on Thursday for a semifinal game against the T-birds, who beat Eagle River in Tuesday's first round of the playoffs.
