Sound familiar? South's Hemry, Hemry claim state tennis singles crowns

A family synonymous with Anchorage tennis celebrated two state championships Saturday.

South High's Joseph Hemry and Christine Hemry earned the singles titles at the state high school tournament at The Alaska Club East on Saturday, the first time a brother-sister duo have pulled off that feat.

Joseph, a sophomore, won the boys singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over top-seeded Jared Lees of West Valley.

The loss marked the third straight year that Lees, a senior, finished as the state runner-up.

Christine, a freshman, stopped West's Merryn Daniel 6-1, 6-1 to take the girls singles crown.

The championships by the Hemrys lifted the Wolverines to second place in the team standings.

Claiming a fourth straight team championship were the West Eagles, who edged South by five points, 110-105. West Valley claimed third place with 80 points.

The champion was West's sixth in nine years, a span that dates back to the first state tournament in 2007.

West advanced players to four of Saturday's five finals but only came away with one victory.

The team of Chas Anderson and Seneca Scott took the boys doubles title for West with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Max Haines and Daniel Ogden of Chugiak.

West's other two doubles teams lost in the finals.

Juneau's Sami Good and Erica Hurtte pulled off an upset in girls doubles, taking down the top-seeded West team of.Ava Lekander and Alli Haynes, 6-2, 6-4. Lekander was last year's state champ in girls singles and Haynes was gunning for her third state title in doubles.

In mixed doubles, top-seeded Trent Chiu and Teresa Sample of West Valley triumphed 6-2, 6-4 over West's Elana Fortson and David Wood.

The wins by the Hemrys continue a long history of champions for a family that boasts three generations of champions.

Bonnie Hemry, Joseph and Christine's grandmother, has been a force on the courts for decades, winning multiple state and city championships.

The second generation dominated the high school scene for years while playing at Dimond. Four siblings -- Holly, Matt, Paul and Heather -- combined for nine Region IV titles back when there was no state high school tournament and Anchorage's region tournament was the sport's pinnacle. Matt won three region titles, Paul and Heather each won two and Holly, Joseph and Christine's mom, won one.
