Be on the alert for these suicide warning signs

Experts say the causes of suicide are complex. Usually people are struggling with multiple issues, not just one thing like a breakup or a job loss. Some who kill themselves may have been suffering from mental illness, including conditions that weren't recognized or treated.

Warning signs sometimes are blatant, such as talking about wanting to die or looking for a way to kill oneself. But others are subtle, such as sleeping too little or too much.

The more of these warning signs a person shows, the greater the risk of suicide, experts say. Here are some additional signs of danger:

-Talking about feeling trapped or being in unbearable pain.

-Talking about being a burden

-Increased drinking or drug use

-Extreme mood swings
