Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly member Karl Kassel defeated state Rep. Tammie Wilson and two other candidates in the race for borough mayor Tuesday night, while the latest in a series of annual initiatives about wood smoke pollution failed by a narrow margin.
Fairbanks city voters approved a 5 percent retail tax on marijuana by a wide margin and incumbent North Pole Mayor Bryce Ward won re-election.
With all precincts reporting, Kassel had 57 percent of the vote. Wilson, a former Assembly member who has served in the Legislature since 2009, collected 39 percent.
