Dimond volleyball team wins another Spiketacular

Teuila Lolotai directed a balanced offensive attack Saturday for the Dimond volleyball team, handing out 15 assists to help the Lynx defend their championship in the 21-team West Spiketacular.

Dimond defeated Kodiak in the championship match 25-16, 25-23 for its fourth straight title in the state's biggest high school volleyball tournament.

Alissa Pili provided eight kills, Cali Clark blasted seven and Brynn Sulte six for the Lynx. Defensively, Dimond was led by Anjoilyn Vreeland (12 digs), Jenna Hickel (10 digs) and Lolotai (6 digs).

Kodiak's Kalameli Matautia ripped seven kills and Richelle Walker tallied three blocks. Other top contributors for the Bears were Ryana Recustodio (10 digs) and Tracy Gatter (12 assists).

Dimond and Kodiak were among eight teams that qualified for the championship bracket during pool play Friday and Saturday at West High and Romig Middle School.

Dimond and South were the top teams in pool play with 11-1 records, but Kodiak (9-3 in pool play) rallied past South in the semifinals 20-25, 25-18, 15-11. Dimond beat tournament host West 25-14, 25-16 in the other semifinal.

While top eight teams played in the gold bracket, the next eight played in the silver bracket, with East stopping Soldotna 25-20, 25-18 in the championship match.

In the bronze bracket, which featured the bottom five teams out of pool play, Valdez edged Service 25-12, 21-25, 25-13.
