Alaska mixed doubles team headed to tennis nationals

The 40-and-over team from Alaska, the Ice Smashers, went undefeated in four matches in Yakima, Washington, over the weekend to win the U.S. Tennis Association's Pacific Northwest Sectionals and qualify for the national tournament.

The Ice Smashers went 3-0 in pool play and beat a team from the Yakima Tennis Club 2-1 in Sunday's final.

The title earned the Alaskans a spot at the USTA League national championship in Surprise, Arizona, in November.

The Ice Smashers featured Elize Rumley, Dana Griffin and Rebecca Kinworthy as its women's players, and Matt Hemry, Paul Hemry and David Griffin as its men's players.
