Dimond, West bounce South, Service from second place in tight CIC flag football race

The big logjam in Cook Inlet Conference flag football got a bit smaller Wednesday.

Instead of five teams sharing second place, three share that position after Dimond and West kicked off the second half of the season with victories.

Dimond beat visiting South 18-6 and West shut out host Service 14-0 in a pair of CIC games featuring four teams that began the night with 4-2 records.

The league's other 4-2 team, Chugiak, hosts Bartlett (1-6) in one of two games scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The other pits undefeated East (7-0) against Eagle River (0-7) in a game that will be played at West.

"It'll be fun to see how it comes down the stretch," West coach Travis Cantrell said. "It's gonna be exciting."

West (5-2) used a strong defense and a potent aerial attack to subdue Service (4-3). Mailee Baquiran supplied 15 flag pulls, an interception and a blocked pass to anchor the defense, and Rebecca Syruo threw for 198 yards to spark the offense.

Syrup completed 11 of 23 passes and scored two touchdowns for the Eagles. She ran two yards for one score and tossed a four-yard pass to Madison Frye for the other.

Frye caught two passes for 14 yards, Kyana Cornejo caught three for 57 yards, Isabella Roberts caught four for 57 and Allysa Brown caught four for 68.

Syrup added an interception, a blocked pass and a flag pull defensively, and Maya Baquiran added six pulls and one blocked pass.

In Dimond's victory, Megan Luther scored all three of the Lynx touchdowns, one of them on a 73-yard punt return. She added scoring runs of one and three yards while rushing for 35 yards on 12 carries.

Tiffany Jackson compiled 64 yards on 11 carries and contributed defensively with three pulls and an interception for the Lynx. Dimond's D'Shaunna Schuster grabbed nine flags and Mariah Youngmun and Makenna Boring each added five pulls.

Dimond (5-2) did all of its scoring in the first half, and South (4-3) scored its lone touchdown as time expired in the fourth quarter when quarterback Anika Valdez ran 20 yards to prevent the shutout.
