Walk-on with strong JUCO credentials joins UAA men's basketball team

A walk-on who may challenge for playing time is joining the UAA men's basketball team.

Drew Peterson, a 6-foot-4 guard/forward, was a two-time all-conference player at San Diego Miramar College. According to UAA coach Rusty Osborne, Peterson turned down scholarship offers from other Division II programs to walk on with the Seawolves.

"(He) is not your typical walk on, but someone we feel will challenge for playing time over the next couple seasons," Osborne said in a press release. "He has good size and strength and he turned down scholarships at our level in order to join our program."

Walk-ons do not receive scholarship aid from the athletic department.

Peterson was an 86 percent free throw shooter during his two seasons at Miramar, where he put up averages of 12.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists as a sophomore.

He was a two-time Pacific Coast Athletic Conference first team and was selected Miramar's 2014-15 Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year.

"We are fortunate to add a player of Drew's ability at this late date," Osborne said.

Peterson is the eight newcomer for the Seawolves, who return five players from last year's 16-13 team in addition to two redshirts.

UAA opens the season Oct. 30 at the three-day Conference Commissioner's Association Division II Tip-Off Classic in California.
