Man found dead in downtown Anchorage

A man was found dead Thursday evening across the street from the Bean's Cafe soup kitchen in downtown Anchorage, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

Shortly before 5 p.m., medics responded to the intersection of Third Avenue and Karluk Street, said Renee Oistad, police spokeswoman.

The call came in for a person passed out, said Officer James Dokken. Medics attempted to resuscitate the man who lay on the sidewalk. They later pronounced him dead, Dokken said.

Police have not identified the man, but Oistad said they believe he was homeless.

"Nothing suspicious at the scene, no signs of foul play," she said in an email.

Around 7:30 p.m., the man's body lay underneath a white sheet on the sidewalk. Clusters of people sat outside Bean's Cafe and police tape cordoned off a short stretch of Karluk Street.

One week ago, the body of another man, 34-year-old Harry Oxereok, was found near that same intersection, next to a chain-link fence. Oxereok was the fourth person found dead outside in Anchorage that week.

On July 15, walkers near Campbell Park at 46th Avenue and Folker Street found the body of 23-year-old Destry Murphy in a tent.

Earlier that day, another man's body was found in a tent in Valley of the Moon Park. On July 13, the body of a man was discovered near the Lucky Wishbone restaurant on Fifth Avenue.

Bean's Cafe hosted an informal memorial on July 17 for the men who died and Mayor Ethan Berkowitz spoke briefly.

"You have a friend in the mayor's office who is looking out for you," he said. "Thank you very much for your courage and your strength."

On Tuesday, Berkowitz announced the opening of 56 new housing units near Merrill Field for residents who are alcoholic, homeless or mentally ill. City, state and federal funds will pay for the housing.

Stacey Greene, 29, stood outside Bean's Cafe Thursday and said she believed she was related to the man who had died across the street that day.

"When people fall, they fall hard," she said.
